I'm a concrete experienced learner who likes getting things done. I like to take risks and consider myself an open learner. I'm very good at recognizing possible problems or situations and understanding people. I have a great imaginative ability to brainstorm things on the move. I will see students in my classroom as a collective of minds under construction, searching for a north to lead them to success. As a teacher, I will not interfere directly in situations that will affect the life of my students; I will be there for them, but ultimately, they are the ones called to act. I will teach students that for each situation in this life, there are different possibilities. I will teach them the process of decision making and how to establish priorities to prepare for life. In my classroom, students will experience a hands-on education accompanied by a portion of good writing. Students will reflect on everything we do in class and in a variety of themes to help them become analytical and critical thinkers. Education will be addressed from all perspectives to include: social, economic, educative, cultural and traditional aspects in order to help students realize we live in a society and we should care about our homeland.
For me, a teacher should be like Mrs. Seda, my ninth grade Spanish teacher. She was the type of teacher who I admired the most because she was always there as a teacher or a counselor, giving me the support I needed to be able to graduate with honors and to compete in academic activities. I saw something in Mrs. Seda; she was more than my teacher; I saw an inspiration for my future. In my opinion, Mrs. Seda was more than a teacher; she was a facilitator who helped me look inside and be able to expose the potential I had in me. Many teachers think being a teacher is just a job; but being a teacher means you give that extra mile for education and for your students. I will be a teacher in the classroom, but also in my personal life. As a teacher I will go further than the classroom up to extracurricular activities which will make the difference in the way of thinking of my students. For me, being a teacher means change, paths and vocation.
On the other hand, I want to be a teacher because I feel a vocation towards the teaching profession. Although I never saw myself as a teacher, after I graduated in 2006 from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, I realized I was good helping teenagers with school work. I went back to college and I got my English teacher certification in December 2014. I decided I will teach my students to think and to give their informed opinion about things. They will learn to differ from others, but with respect and they will always be aware their actions will affect other people. I will teach my student to have respect for diversity and tolerance towards others. We live in a complex society formed by people from different ethnics and social backgrounds and we should respect each other. I will see the community and parents as a very important supportive part of my students' learning process.
My classroom will become a safe zone for practicing English and to ask questions. The classroom will be a learning community where the teacher is learning constantly from their students and the students from the teacher. The participation of students will be a must so the learning teaching process can be completed. I will conduct my English class with special attention to the Oral Approach with a concentration on social conversations and points of view. My class will be inclusive and everyone will be encouraged to participate. The class will become a group where we will not abandon anyone to the arms of the ignorance.
In conclusion, the learning I will conduct in my classroom is going to be based in the curriculum from the Department of Education, institutional policies and curricular maps with special attention on my student's needs and their struggles revealed through diagnostic tests given at the beginning of each course.
